LACK OF FRIENDS
Signposts is here to help with any of these issues and others, so please come along to our drop-in centre in Auden Way, Highfields (opposite West Way Shops) and ask to see a Community Worker. We are open from 9.30am to 2.30pm each weekday.
(Please note: All discussions with our workers are kept confidential. We are an independent charity and no personal information will be released to the statutory authorities unless you or a person you mention is thought to be in significant danger of harm or neglect.)
The background to Signposts
In July 2007 the Signpost Centre in Highfields was set up by members of Rising Brook Baptist Church in a building that belongs to the borough council. Members of the church worked together with the health authorities and councils to re-furbish and equip the building for community use. Since it opened it has helped hundreds of people to find a place of warmth, friendliness and support.
Providing services – Signposts acts as a local hub, so that the local community has easy access to well-being services, employment, financial, good company and family services.
Encouraging – The Signpost centre is also here to encourage individuals to help themselves and improve their circumstances. That may be through organised courses and groups or simply introducing you to the right person with the right advice.
Supporting – The best thing about the centre is that we provide face-to-face support for people in the community. This support is based on what each individual needs. It could be company, a cup of tea, access to the internet or even just a friendly face.
The services, support and encouragement provided at the centre are flexible. At Signposts we want to tailor what we provide so that we meet your needs as well as possible.
Our internet cafe is at the heart of our centre. It’s where we offer daily choices of snacks and drinks, and we only make a small charge for these.
Anyone is welcome to come in during our opening hours of 9:30am to 2:30pm Monday to Friday. You can just enjoy the cafe, read the paper, work or play on your laptop, or access the in house internet-enabled computers.
You may prefer to be on your own or chat to other customers, or our workers, or access the groups and services that run in the centre. In return we ask only that you adhere to our Code of Conduct which ensures that a respectful and friendly atmosphere is maintained at all times.
Signposts is run by Christians with a Christian ethos. We welcome people of all faiths and none into our centre and all will be treated with equal respect.
At Signposts we employ our own Community Workers who build supportive relationships with people and offer both emotional and practical support where needed. Their role can range from sitting chatting informally to people in the café to helping people to fill in forms. They help you to navigate the often confusing social welfare processes. They will help you to understand how complex benefits decisions are arrived at. They will contact agencies and charities on your behalf. They advocate for you and will mentor you over a long period of time when necessary. A key part of what our workers do is to build community by gathering people together in groups for meals, for activities, or discussions.
